How an eSIM works: the embedded chip, downloading a carrier profile, using it abroad, and which line should carry data and calls.

An eSIM does the same job as a plastic SIM card, but the chip is already soldered into your phone and the carrier profile arrives as a download. How does an eSIM work in practice? You buy a plan, scan a QR code, the profile installs, and your phone registers on a local carrier network as if you had inserted a SIM.

What the eSIM chip actually is

Inside your phone is a small rewritable chip (the industry name is eUICC). A SIM card's real content is a set of credentials: an identifier, an operator key, and network settings. On a plastic SIM those credentials are burned in at the factory. On an eSIM they are written to the chip over the air, and they can be deleted and replaced without opening the phone.

One chip can store several profiles at once. Most current phones hold multiple eSIM profiles and let one or two be active simultaneously, so a home line and a travel plan can run side by side. Only the profiles you activate consume a slot; the rest sit dormant until you switch them on.

How the profile gets onto your phone

The download is a handshake between your phone and the carrier's provisioning server:

  1. You buy a plan. The carrier reserves a profile for you and issues an activation code, usually rendered as a QR code or a direct install link.
  2. Your phone requests the profile. Scanning the QR code tells the local profile assistant on the phone which server to contact and which reserved profile to claim. You need Wi-Fi or existing data for this step, which is why you install before you land, not after.
  3. The profile installs. Credentials and network settings are written to the chip. This takes seconds.
  4. The phone registers. Once the line is enabled, the phone attaches to a partner network in the destination country and data starts flowing.

Nothing about this is reversible in the way a plastic SIM is. A deleted profile is usually gone for good, so do not remove one until you are sure you no longer need it.

Install early, activate late

Most travel eSIMs separate installation from activation. Install the profile at home over Wi-Fi, leave the line switched off, and turn it on when you land. The plan's validity window normally starts on first network connection, not on download, so check the plan terms before you enable the line.

Does an eSIM work abroad?

That is the main reason people buy one. A travel eSIM is a plan sold for a destination and served by that country's carriers, so you pay local data rates instead of your home carrier's roaming rates. Primary or secondary: which line does what

With two lines active, your phone asks you to assign roles. A setup that works for most travellers:

  • Home line: keep it enabled for calls and SMS so you still receive bank codes and calls on your own number. Turn data roaming off on this line. That is what stops surprise charges.
  • Travel eSIM: set it as the line for mobile data. If the eSIM connects through a partner network rather than its own, your phone may require data roaming on for that line specifically to attach. Toggling roaming is per line, not global.
  • Default for calls: leave it on your home number unless the travel plan includes a local number you actually want people to use.

You do not need to disable your primary line. You only disable its data. Many travel plans are data-only, so calls and texts continue to route over your home number as usual, and messaging apps run over the eSIM's data.

Do you keep your phone number?

Yes, if you keep your home profile installed. The travel eSIM is a separate line with its own identity; adding it does not touch your existing number. Some data-only plans give you no dialable number at all, which is fine when everything you use is app-based.

Which country that IP resolves to is not guaranteed to match the country on the plan label.   • You want local content or local prices. If the exit IP is not in the destination country, geo-gated services behave as if you never left.
  • You log into accounts that watch IP history. Ad platforms, payment dashboards and social accounts treat a sudden country change on login as a risk signal.   • Device support is uneven. Older and some region-specific handsets have no eSIM at all.
  • Deletion is final. Removing a profile to free a slot usually means buying a replacement.
