Is TextNow a VoIP Number? What It Means for Codes

Yes, TextNow numbers are VoIP, in TextNow's own words. Why services reject them, what the SIM changes, recycling risk, and what to use instead.

Yes. TextNow numbers are VoIP numbers, and TextNow says so itself. Its help center tells users to ask the app sending a code whether it supports "TextNow's VoIP phone numbers." A signup can therefore reject a TextNow number outright, or accept it and never deliver the code. Google Voice numbers fall into the same category.

Why does a VoIP line type matter for verification codes?

Many services look up a phone number's line type before they send a verification code, and many refuse numbers that come back as non-fixed VoIP. Twilio's line-type documentation defines that category as "A virtual phone number obtained online without requiring a physical device," and gives Google Voice as an example.

The lookup checks the number's records. Your phone and your app play no part in it. A failure shows up in one of two ways:

  • Rejected at entry. The form refuses the number immediately. This phone number cannot be used for verification covers that message and its fixes.
  • Accepted, code never arrives. The service takes the number, then its SMS route filters the message or drops it.

For the longer explanation of how these filters work, read why VoIP numbers fail SMS verification.

Does the TextNow SIM or a paid plan make the number non-VoIP?

TextNow's help center (read October 2026) says: "You'll be able to receive most verification codes by activating a TextNow SIM card or purchasing one of the following recurring subscriptions: Lock in Number, Ad-Free+." The SIM puts a compatible phone on what TextNow calls "our nationwide 5G network" (TextNow blog).

What changes: TextNow states that you can receive most verification codes once you have the SIM or one of those subscriptions.

What stays the same: the same help article still says "Some services do not support TextNow numbers for verification or for setting up Two-Factor Authentication." It also says "Canadian verification codes are largely unsupported at this time."

What nobody documents: whether activating the SIM changes how carrier or line-type lookups classify the number. Neither TextNow nor the lookup providers say. The only way to know for your own number is to run a lookup after you activate. Even then, the result only reflects that database. The service you are signing up to may query a different one.

What happens to accounts tied to a free TextNow number?

TextNow's help center says: "we recycle inactive numbers tied to our free Wi-Fi service. If your number is released due to inactivity, you may have issues accessing online accounts tied to that number."

This risk is the one that costs people accounts. The signup works today. Months later you lose your password or a login triggers a security check, and the recovery code goes to whoever holds the number next. If nobody holds it, the code goes nowhere. You find out at the exact moment you need access.

Decision rule for free numbers

Use a free number only for accounts you would not mind losing. If an account you care about is already tied to one, add a second recovery method now (an authenticator app, a backup email, or a number you keep) while you can still log in.

Is Google Voice a VoIP number?

Yes. Twilio lists Google Voice as its example of a non-fixed VoIP number. Google's own Voice help page says "Some websites, such as banks or subscription services, won't send text messages to Google Voice numbers." It also says "You can't send texts to five- or six-digit short code numbers." That limit matters when a service asks you to text a keyword to a short code to confirm.

How can you tell if a number is VoIP?

Run a line-type lookup on it. Free carrier-lookup sites and paid APIs such as Twilio Lookup take the number in international format (for example +1 followed by the ten digits). They return a line type such as mobile or nonFixedVoip.

How to read the result:

  • Mobile: the number is classified as a carrier mobile line. Most verification flows treat it that way.
  • nonFixedVoip: expect rejections or missing codes on services that filter VoIP.
  • Different answers from different tools: each tool reads its own database. You cannot query the database the target service uses. Treat any VoIP result as a warning.

How platforms detect VoIP and virtual numbers goes deeper on the signals beyond line type.

What should you use when a service refuses VoIP?

Use a non-VoIP carrier number. VoidMob never sells VoIP numbers. Every SMS number is a non-VoIP carrier number, offered in three tiers:

  • One-time OTP (US numbers). The number stays active for 15 minutes and can receive several codes in that window. If no SMS arrives, the rental cancels and refunds in full automatically. The exception is services marked non-refundable, which expire without a refund, so check that before you buy. Poll for the code rather than cancelling early, because frequent cancellations pause SMS purchasing for 24 hours.
  • Rentals (US numbers). Keep the same number for 3, 7, 14 or 30 days, with optional auto-renewal. A rental suits accounts that send codes again over a few days.
  • Dedicated monthly number. One carrier number that stays yours, for an account you plan to keep and recover. A dedicated United States number is $19.99 a month as of October 2026.

The recycling problem above is the case for a dedicated line. Dedicated non-VoIP number vs OTP walks through when a one-time code is enough and when it is not. All tiers are on the SMS verification page.

Is TextNow a VoIP app?

Yes. TextNow's help center refers to its numbers as "TextNow's VoIP phone numbers" and tells users to check with the app sending a code whether it supports them.

Is TextNow non-VoIP if I activate the SIM card?

TextNow says the SIM or a Lock in Number or Ad-Free+ subscription lets you receive most verification codes. Whether the SIM changes how line-type lookups classify the number is not documented anywhere, so run a lookup on your own number after activating.

How can you tell if a phone number is VoIP?

Run a line-type lookup with a carrier-lookup site or an API such as Twilio Lookup. A result of nonFixedVoip means services that filter VoIP will likely reject the number or never deliver the code.

What are the downsides of TextNow for verification codes?

Per TextNow's help center, some services do not support TextNow numbers for verification or 2FA, Canadian verification codes are largely unsupported, and inactive numbers on the free Wi-Fi service are recycled, which can lock you out of accounts tied to them.

Does Google Voice work for bank verification?

Often not. Google's Voice help says some websites, such as banks or subscription services, won't send text messages to Google Voice numbers.
