Discord Invalid Phone Number: Why and What to Do

Why Discord says your phone number is invalid, what its help article and Terms say about numbers, and how to fix or appeal the rejection.

Discord's verification help article says a number is invalid when it "was not entered correctly or is unusable." The same article states that "VOIP, Burner, or Landline numbers cannot be used." Discord's Terms of Service treat your number as a contact and recovery method. The fix is a correctly entered mobile number that you own and plan to keep.

The Terms set no rules of their own on number types such as VoIP, virtual, landline or recycled numbers. Those rules come from the help article. The facts below were checked against both pages as of October 2026.

What does Discord's invalid phone number error mean?

Discord's help article has a "Possible Errors" table with three cases. Each case has a different fix, so first work out which one applies to you. The table below quotes Discord's descriptions. The wording on your screen may differ.

Error (Discord's help article)What Discord saysWhat to do
Invalid phone number"the phone number was not entered correctly or is unusable. Be sure to use a valid phone number. VOIP, Burner, or Landline numbers cannot be used."Check the country code and digits, then "try re-entering the phone number you wish to verify." Use a mobile number you own.
Rate Limit/Recently Used"the phone number was recently used and is currently in a timeout period.""Please wait 24-48 hrs before verifying your phone number once more."
Existing account"the phone number may be associated with an accidental Discord account."Follow Discord's How to Remove a Phone Number article to free the number from that account.

In Discord's table, "invalid" means the entry was wrong or the number is a type Discord refuses. The timeout is a separate error, and it has its own wait period.

What do Discord's Terms say about your phone number?

Discord's Terms of Service mention phones only as a contact method: "You can provide a username and password, and a way of contacting you (such as an email address and/or phone number). You'll also need to provide your birthday." The Terms list a phone number as one option alongside email.

Four other clauses affect the number you choose:

  • Verification can be required. "In some cases, you may be required to verify your account or provide additional information."
  • Accuracy is your job. "You must always provide accurate information to Discord and maintain the accuracy of the information associated with your account." Enter your real number and update it if it changes.
  • Recovery runs through the number. "If you get locked out of your account, we'll need to contact you at the email or phone number associated with your account. If your account is compromised or you no longer have access to your email account or phone number, we may not be able to restore your access to your account or the servers you've created."
  • SMS costs are yours. "You are responsible for any mobile charges that you may incur for using our services. This includes data charges and charges for messaging, such as SMS, MMS, or other messaging protocols or technologies."

The recovery clause matters most. If you lose the number, Discord may not be able to restore your account, even after the number was accepted.

How do you fix an invalid phone number on Discord?

Work through these steps in order:

  1. Re-enter the number carefully. Discord's table says to "try re-entering the phone number you wish to verify". Check the country code and remove spaces or extra characters before you do.
  2. Confirm the number type. Discord's help article excludes VoIP, burner and landline numbers. Second-number apps are often VoIP: TextNow says so about its own numbers, and Why VoIP Numbers Fail SMS Verification explains how platforms tell the difference.
  3. Use a number you will keep. Under the Terms, that number is your route back into the account. A number you will lose next month causes a lockout problem later.
  4. Wait out a timeout. If you got the Rate Limit/Recently Used error, wait the 24 to 48 hours Discord gives, then try once.
  5. Free the number from an accidental account. For the Existing account error, follow Discord's How to Remove a Phone Number article.
  6. Contact Discord support. If the number is correct and still refused, open a ticket at dis.gd/contact. The Terms also say: "For technical support or other assistance with respect to our services, you can submit a request here."

If the number is accepted but no code arrives, you have a different problem. Not Receiving Verification Codes? covers delivery failures.

What if an enforcement action is involved?

The Terms let you appeal Discord's decisions: "You can appeal any enforcement action we take under these terms or other policies, including terminations, suspensions, or content removals through this form or available in-app options." The appeal form is linked from the Terms page.

EU residents have a deadline: "If you reside in the European Union, your appeal must be submitted within six months of the day the relevant decision has been notified to you."

The Terms also give Discord broad discretion: "we reserve the right to suspend or terminate your account and/or your access to some or all of our services with or without notice, at our discretion for any reason." One listed reason is "Your account has been inactive for more than two years." For an enforcement action, the appeal form is the route the Terms give.

Which kind of number should you keep on a Discord account?

Pick the number based on how long you will need it, not on whether it gets past one screen. Under the Terms, Discord contacts you at that number when you are locked out. The number has to still be yours months from now.

VoidMob: mobile proxies on real 4G/5G devices, non-VoIP SMS verification and eSIM. Every VoidMob number is a non-VoIP carrier number. The three tiers differ in how long the number stays yours:

  • One-time OTP: the number is active for 15 minutes. If no SMS arrives in that window, the rental is refunded automatically. Services marked non-refundable are the exception. The number is gone after its 15-minute window, so it cannot receive a later recovery code, which makes it a poor fit as an account's long-term contact.
  • Long-term rental: the same US number for 3, 7, 14 or 30 days, always active, with optional auto-renewal.
  • Dedicated monthly line: one non-VoIP carrier number you keep month to month, usable across platforms and priced per country. A dedicated US line is $19.99 a month as of October 2026. See dedicated numbers by country for the live list.

Discord decides which numbers it accepts, and no provider can guarantee acceptance, VoidMob included. For more on keeping a number versus using one once, see Dedicated Non-VoIP Number: Why Private Solutions Beat OTPs. Platform-specific details are on the Discord SMS verification page.

Does Discord accept VoIP numbers?

No, according to Discord's verification help article, which states "VOIP, Burner, or Landline numbers cannot be used." The Terms of Service themselves do not cover number types. For a specific number, ask Discord support at dis.gd/contact.

What does Discord's invalid phone number error say?

Discord's help article describes it as "the phone number was not entered correctly or is unusable." The same table lists two other errors: Rate Limit/Recently Used and Existing account. The text in the app may be worded differently, so match your case to the closest description.

How many Discord accounts can use one phone number?

Neither the Terms nor the verification help article states a count. The help article does say a number "may be associated with an accidental Discord account" and points to Discord's How to Remove a Phone Number article. Ask Discord support for anything beyond that.

How many attempts do I get, and how long is the wait?

The help article gives the wait but not an attempt count. For a recently used number in a timeout, it says "Please wait 24-48 hrs before verifying your phone number once more." Wait out the full period, then try once.

Why was my working phone number rejected?

The help article lists three causes: an entry error or unusable number, a recent-use timeout, or an existing account that may hold the number. If none of these fit, the pages checked here give no further reason. Open a ticket at dis.gd/contact.
