Telegram Without a Phone Number: What Works

Telegram cannot be registered with an email address alone. Every account is created against a phone number that receives a login code, so "without a phone number" in practice means one of three things: keep your number but hide it from everyone, register with a number that is not your personal line, or use an anonymous no-SIM number from Telegram's own Fragment marketplace. All three end with a working account; they differ in cost, recoverability, and how much of your identity the number carries.

Why Telegram asks for a number at all

The number is the account identifier and the anti-abuse layer. Telegram uses it to send the login code, to deduplicate accounts, and to rate-limit signups. Email exists only as a secondary factor: after signup you can attach a login email and a two-step verification password, but you cannot skip the number at creation time (Telegram FAQ).

Two consequences worth planning around before you register:

• Whoever controls the number can eventually control the account. A code sent to a recycled or expired number is a takeover.
• Cloud chats are not end-to-end encrypted by default (only Secret Chats are). Telegram's privacy policy states it may disclose IP addresses and phone numbers to authorities in response to valid legal requests, so a number that maps to you is a link to you.

Option 1: keep your number, hide it

The fastest fix if privacy from other users is the goal. Your number stays on the account but nobody sees it.

1. Set a public username: Settings > Edit Profile > Username. People can then reach you at @username with no number exchanged.
2. Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Phone Number and set "Who can see my phone number" to Nobody, and "Who can find me by my number" to My Contacts (or nobody, on clients that expose it).
3. Turn off Sync Contacts if you do not want your address book uploaded, and delete already-synced contacts from the same screen.

This solves visibility, not attribution. Telegram still holds the number.

Option 2: register with a number that isn't yours

This is what most people actually want: a separate, verifiable number for a Telegram account that is not tied to your personal SIM. The number type matters more than the provider.

Telegram filters many VoIP ranges at signup, and codes sent to VoIP numbers often never arrive. Carrier-issued (non-VoIP) numbers receive the code normally. The mechanics of that check are covered in how platforms detect VoIP and virtual numbers.

One-time OTP and rental catalog numbers are US numbers. If you need a non-US number for Telegram, the dedicated monthly line is the tier to buy.

Option 3: anonymous no-SIM number

Telegram supports signing up with an anonymous number bought on its Fragment marketplace, paid in TON, with no SIM card involved (Telegram's announcement). The number is a blockchain asset rather than a carrier line: it cannot receive normal SMS from other services, and it is priced by auction, so it is usually the most expensive route. It is the right choice only when the requirement is "no carrier record anywhere" and the account never needs to verify anything else.

Which option to pick

Decision rule: if losing the account would cost you anything, buy a number you keep. A one-time code is fine for a disposable account and a bad idea for a channel you plan to grow.

The failure mode nobody warns you about

The two things that actually break these accounts are recovery and network signal, in that order.

Recovery. Immediately after registration, set Settings > Privacy and Security > Two-Step Verification with a password and a recovery email, and enable a login email if your client offers it. If the number later expires and Telegram asks for an SMS code on a new device, the password is what keeps you in. Skip it and the account is only as durable as the rental.

Network signal. Telegram checks the connection, not just the number. Two patterns cause codes that never arrive or sessions that get terminated:

• Registering over a datacenter IP or a heavily shared VPN exit. These ranges are flagged and are a common reason the code silently fails.
• A number/IP mismatch that changes shape mid-flow: request the code from one country's IP, enter it from another, then log in the next day from a third. A real phone does not do that.

Keep the country of the exit IP consistent with the country of the number, and keep the same session for the whole registration flow.
