Instagram Not Sending SMS Code: What to Do Now

Instagram texts its 6-digit code only to your confirmed number. Check that number, then use the login link, browser recovery page or backup codes.

Instagram texts its 6-digit login and two-factor code only to the confirmed phone number on your account. If the code is not arriving, first check that the confirmed number is correct. Then use one of Instagram's other routes: a login link sent to your email or phone, the account recovery page in a browser, or a backup code you saved.

Why is Instagram not sending the SMS code?

Instagram sends the code to one place, the confirmed number. The SMS two-factor authentication help page says "you must have a confirmed telephone number for your Instagram account to use text messages (SMS) two-factor authentication." A confirmed number with a typo, or one on a line you no longer have, gets the code instead of the phone in your hand.

When the code does not arrive, skip the guesswork about causes and wait times you read elsewhere and use the routes Instagram documents, below.

How do Instagram's SMS codes work?

Instagram's SMS codes go to the number you confirmed, and the number you enter during setup becomes that number. The help page puts it this way: "When you enter a telephone number to turn on two-factor authentication, it becomes the confirmed number for your account."

With SMS 2FA on, you get "a text message (SMS) with a special 6-digit security code each time someone tries logging into your Instagram account from a device we don't recognize." The consequence: a login from a device Instagram does not recognize triggers a text to the confirmed number, whichever phone you happen to be holding. For the longer version of how Instagram tells one device and account from another, see How Instagram Detects Multiple Accounts.

To turn SMS 2FA on from a browser, Instagram lists these steps:

  1. "Click More in the bottom left, then click Settings."
  2. "Click Accounts Center, then click Password and security."
  3. Open two-factor authentication. "Click next to SMS or WhatsApp, then click Continue if prompted."
  4. "Enter the code received on your phone number, click Next."

The same page also offers "Chat with Meta AI support assistant" if you get stuck.

What should you do if you are still logged in?

You can fix a logged-in account from settings. Start with Instagram's own advice: "Confirm your phone number and email address in account settings are correct."

If the number is wrong or no longer yours, the change your 2FA phone number page gives the path:

  • In Accounts Center: "If two-factor authentication is already on, click SMS or WhatsApp." Then "Click Use different phone number."
  • In the app, during setup with a mistyped number: "Instead of entering a code, tap Change phone number below Next."

After the change, "You'll be sent a text message (SMS) to the new phone number with a 6-digit security code." The page warns that "Not everyone will be able to access this setting in Meta Account or Accounts Center at this time. If these steps don't work for you, try this:" and gives the in-app route "Tap Security, then tap Two-factor authentication."

Save backup codes while you can still log in

Instagram's advice on backup codes: "be sure to save these codes so you can access your account if you lose your device or have trouble using another security method." Store them somewhere other than the phone that receives your codes.

What should you do if you are locked out?

Instagram offers three routes when you cannot log in. Try them in this order.

Login link. Per the login help page: "On the login screen, tap Forgot password?" then "Enter the username, email address, or phone number associated with your account, then click Send login link." The link arrives "in your email or a text message (SMS)", so an email on file gives you a route that does not depend on the SMS code.

Browser recovery page. The account recovery help page says: "If you cannot log into your Instagram account, you can use the account recovery page on a browser to reset your password." This is also the answer if you cannot reset your password from the app.

Backup codes. If you saved them, use one in place of the SMS code.

If the login link does not work, Instagram says "you may be able to request support from us on a mobile device."

What if you no longer have the phone number?

Instagram has a separate path for a lost number. The account recovery help page links to "Lost access to email or phone number linked to Instagram account". Expect identity checks. Instagram may ask for "the email address or phone number you signed up with and the type of device you used at the time of sign up". Accounts with photos may require "a video selfie", which Instagram says "will be deleted within 30 days."

Not every account gets every option: "Some of these recovery steps may not be available to you depending on the type of account you're trying to recover". Instagram texts the confirmed number on your account, and the steps above for changing that number start from your settings, so if you cannot log in, use the recovery routes rather than a new number.

Which number should you set as your confirmed number?

Your confirmed number should be one you will still hold the next time you log in from a new device, because every future 2FA code goes there. A number that expires leaves your next code with nobody. Save backup codes when you set the number, and guard it against takeover. SIM Swap Attacks Target Crypto explains why the line behind your codes needs protecting.

VoidMob offers mobile proxies on real 4G/5G devices, non-VoIP SMS verification and eSIM. On the SMS side, every number is a non-VoIP carrier number. There are three tiers, and they fit Instagram's model differently:

  • One-time OTP (US numbers): active for 15 minutes, refunded automatically if no SMS arrives. Services marked non-refundable are the exception. The short window suits a single code, not a long-term 2FA number.
  • Rentals (US numbers): keep the same number for 3, 7, 14 or 30 days, with optional auto-renewal. The number only keeps working as long as you keep renewing it.
  • Dedicated monthly line: one number you keep month to month, offered per country. Of the three tiers, this one best fits a confirmed number you need to keep.

Verify delivery with Instagram's own step: when you change the number, Instagram sends a 6-digit code to it, and a code that arrives shows the number receives Instagram's texts. Options for your own account are on the Instagram SMS verification page, and the current price of a one-time US number for Instagram is below.

How long should I wait for the code, and how many times can I resend it?

Do not rely on a fixed wait time or resend count quoted elsewhere. While you wait, use a route that does not depend on the SMS: the login link by email, the browser recovery page, or a saved backup code.

What does the error mean when my code fails?

Start with the basics: check that the confirmed number in your settings is correct. If you are locked out, use Forgot password? and the login link, or the account recovery page in a browser.

Does Instagram send codes to prepaid, virtual or foreign numbers?

Instagram sends the code to the confirmed number on your account, so pick a number you control and will keep. When you change the number, Instagram texts a 6-digit code to it, and that text confirms delivery.

Can I get the code another way, such as WhatsApp or backup codes?

The setting is labeled 'SMS or WhatsApp', and Instagram tells you to save backup codes so you can still get in if you lose your device or a security method fails. Saved backup codes are the documented fallback.

Is there a way to contact Instagram if none of this works?

The login help page says that if the login link fails, 'you may be able to request support from us on a mobile device.' The SMS 2FA page offers a chat with the Meta AI support assistant. The pages cited here name no other channel.
