Telegram Too Many Attempts: How Long It Lasts, How to Fix

Telegram's 'Too many attempts, please try again later' is a FLOOD_WAIT rate limit with a hidden timer. What it means and how to get back in.

Telegram's "Too many attempts, please try again later." message means Telegram's servers have rate-limited login or signup codes for your phone number. You requested, resent or entered codes more times than the server allows. Telegram publishes no wait time for this message. The server knows the exact wait, but the official apps do not display it. The fix is to stop trying, wait, and then make one careful request.

Telegram Desktop shows the same limit with different wording: "Too many tries. Please try again later." Neither message is a ban or a spam limit. Your account and chats are untouched.

What does "Too many attempts" mean on Telegram?

The message is Telegram's flood limit. Telegram's error handling documentation defines error 420 FLOOD as "The maximum allowed number of attempts to invoke the given method with the given input parameters has been exceeded. For example, in an attempt to request a large number of text messages (SMS) for the same phone number."

For logins specifically, Telegram's developer documentation on User Authorization says: "Each phone number is limited to only a certain number of login attempts per day." The same page says the exact number "is subject to change." Past that number, "the API will return a FLOOD error until the next day." The documentation describes a cap per phone number, so the cap follows the number you are logging in with.

Why doesn't Telegram show how long to wait?

Telegram's servers do send a precise wait. The error is FLOOD_WAIT_X, which the errors page explains as "A wait of X seconds is required (where X is a number)."

The official open-source apps for iOS and Android are both listed on telegram.org/apps. They show the fixed "Too many attempts" text whenever a code request, a resend or a code entry returns FLOOD_WAIT. The seconds value is dropped, so the screen never tells you the real wait.

Any guide that quotes a specific number of hours is guessing. What Telegram does document is a cap on login attempts per number per day, so extra taps on Resend only spend attempts from that cap.

The password screen is the exception

If you have two-step verification on and the lockout appears on the cloud password step, Android shows the wait: "Too many attempts, please try again in" followed by a time. That screen covers your password, not the login code.

How do you get back into Telegram after too many attempts?

Follow these steps in order. Each one avoids spending attempts you do not need to spend.

  1. Stop retrying. Do not tap Resend and do not guess codes. Telegram caps login attempts per number per day, and repeated tries only spend that allowance.
  2. Check the "Telegram" chat on any device that is still logged in. The Telegram FAQ says "we may send the login code via Telegram instead of SMS." The auth docs describe that code type as "a Telegram service notification to all other logged-in sessions." If your codes were going there and not to SMS, the guide on Telegram code sent to the app instead of SMS covers that case.
  3. Wait. Telegram gives no duration. The only figure in Telegram's own documentation is the daily cap per number, which lasts "until the next day."
  4. Make one request from the official Telegram app on your phone. Telegram's docs note that "in some conditions, only the official applications can receive a login/signup code via SMS/call," so third-party clients can come up empty. Enter the code once, carefully. A code read out by phone call is only an option if two-step verification is already on: the FAQ says "login codes dictated via a phone call are only available for accounts that have two-step verification enabled."
  5. If you are still locked out, contact Telegram. The FAQ says: "If you are having registration or login problems, please contact us using this form," which links to telegram.org/support. You can also message the official @SmsTelegram account, which handles login help.

If the code never reaches your phone at all, carrier filtering and number type are covered in not receiving verification codes.

How is "Too many attempts" different from a limited or frozen account?

The three Telegram messages below look alike, but each has a different cause and a different fix.

The spam FAQ says a limited account "can send messages to people who have their number saved as a contact." It also names a cause that matters when you pick a number: "Some numbers may trigger an overly harsh response from our system, either due to their previous owners' activities or due to them being certain virtual/VOIP numbers." The reasons VoIP ranges get treated this way are explained in why VoIP numbers fail SMS verification.

How do you stop Telegram from locking you out again?

Once you are back in, these make your next login less dependent on SMS codes:

  • A passkey. The Telegram FAQ describes passkeys as "an additional login method that can be used instead of SMS." Logging in with a passkey sends no code request against your number.
  • Two-step verification with a recovery email. A recovery email gives you a way back if you forget the password. Two-step verification is also what makes phone-call codes available.
  • A second logged-in session. A phone plus a desktop means app-delivered codes have somewhere to land.
  • A number you keep. Telegram ties the account to its number. If that number is a one-time verification number, it is gone when the next login code arrives.

Which number type keeps future Telegram codes reachable?

A new number will not get you back into an existing account. The limit on your current number clears by waiting. What a number choice does affect is whether you can receive codes on the next login.

VoidMob sells every SMS number as a non-VoIP carrier number, in three tiers:

  • One-time OTP: a US number that stays active for 15 minutes. If no SMS arrives in that window, you are refunded automatically, except on services marked non-refundable. After the window closes, the number is no longer yours, so it cannot receive a future Telegram login code.
  • Rentals: a US number you keep for 3, 7, 14 or 30 days. The number stays active, receives messages automatically and has optional auto-renewal.
  • Dedicated monthly line: one non-VoIP number, priced per country, usable across platforms. See dedicated numbers by country.

For a Telegram account you plan to keep, a rental receives future codes for as long as it stays active or renewed, and a dedicated line stays yours month after month. The trade-offs against one-time codes are covered in dedicated non-VoIP number vs OTP. Below are the current Telegram SMS verification prices on VoidMob's US numbers, for when you set up an account on a number you control:

How long does Telegram Too Many Attempts last?

Telegram publishes no wait time for it. The server sends a FLOOD_WAIT error that includes a number of seconds, but the official iOS and Android apps drop that value and show only 'Too many attempts, please try again later.' Telegram's developer documentation describes a daily login cap per phone number, after which the API returns a FLOOD error until the next day.

How do I fix Telegram too many attempts on my iPhone?

Stop requesting and entering codes, because Telegram caps login attempts per phone number per day. Check the 'Telegram' chat on any other device that is logged in, since codes are often sent there instead of by SMS. Wait, then make a single code request from the official Telegram app and enter the code once. If you are still blocked, use telegram.org/support or message @SmsTelegram.

Does retrying make the lockout worse?

Telegram's developer documentation caps login attempts per phone number per day, so repeated requests spend attempts from that cap. Telegram does not say whether a retry extends the wait. Waiting, then making one careful attempt, uses the fewest attempts.

How long does Telegram limit your account?

That question is about a spam limit, which is a different problem from 'Too many attempts.' Telegram's spam FAQ says that for a first-time limit, 'most likely your account will be limited for a few days or so.' A limited account can only message people who have your number saved as a contact, and appeals go to @SpamBot.

Why am I locked out of my Telegram account?

If you see 'Too many attempts' or 'Too many tries,' Telegram's servers have rate-limited login codes for your phone number after too many requests or entries. You are not banned. If you see a message about deleting and re-creating your account too many times, that is a separate signup limit.
