Try Again Later on Instagram means Instagram has restricted an action on your account, usually a like, follow, comment or direct message, and will not let you repeat it for now. In the app, the popup reads: "Try Again Later. We restrict certain activity to protect our community. Tell us if you think we made a mistake."
Instagram's help page on unauthorized activity explains the cause: "if inauthentic activity is detected on your account, you may see an error message that says, 'Try again later' when using Instagram." If the app still opens and only one kind of action fails, this restriction is what you are seeing.
Why is Instagram saying Try Again Later?
Instagram shows Try Again Later when activity on your account looks automated, repetitive or unauthorized. The causes that Meta and Instagram document fall into five groups:
- Fast, repeated actions. Meta's Spam policy, which covers Instagram, bars "engaging with content ... either manually or automatically, at very high frequencies." Tapping fast by hand counts too.
- Repeated identical content. Instagram's comment rules say "You can't post the same comment multiple times (including emoji)." The Spam policy adds: "We may place restrictions on accounts that are acting at lower frequencies when other indicators of Spam (e.g., posting repetitive content) or signals of inauthenticity are present." A slow pace does not protect copy-paste comments.
- Apps that hold your password. Growth apps that promise likes or followers log in as you. Instagram warns: "Accounts that continue to use non-Instagram apps to get more followers may notice that certain parts of their Instagram account are limited."
- Automation. Instagram's Terms of Use bar "accessing or collecting information in an automated way without our express permission." Scripts and bots running on your login fall here.
- Someone else on your account. The help page that documents this message is about compromised profiles. If you did nothing unusual, treat the popup as a sign that someone else may have access.
What limits does Instagram actually publish?
Instagram publishes very few hard numbers, as of October 2026. The help center gives no daily quota for likes, follows, comments or DMs. Any "safe number per day" you read elsewhere is someone's estimate, not Instagram's.
| Action | Published limit | Where Instagram says it |
|---|---|---|
| Accounts you follow | No more than 7,500 in total | Following limits help page |
| @ mentions in one comment | No more than 5 | Comment rules help page |
| Hashtags in one comment | No more than 30 | Comment rules help page |
| Same comment posted again | Not allowed, emoji included | Comment rules help page |
| Direct messages | A limit exists, no number published | Messaging limits help page |
| Likes, follows, comments per day | No number published | None |
The sources are the following limit page ("follow more than 7,500 people"), the comment rules page ("more than 5 @ mentions", "more than 30 hashtags") and the messaging limits page, which says you "may not be able to send more direct messages for a period of time."
How do you get rid of Try Again Later on Instagram?
Instagram lifts the restriction on its own schedule, and no setting ends it early. While it is in place, remove whatever may have caused it and secure the account. These steps follow Instagram's own list; they are what Instagram recommends, not a guaranteed fix:
- Stop the action. Retrying the blocked like, follow or comment repeats the activity that was restricted.
- Revoke third-party apps. Instagram's wording is "Revoke access on Instagram to any suspicious third-party apps." Include growth, scheduling and analytics tools you no longer use.
- Change your password. Any app or person with the old password keeps working until you change it.
- Turn on two-factor authentication.
- Confirm your phone number and email so security codes and recovery messages reach you.
- Check Accounts Center for linked profiles or logins you don't recognize.
- Open Account Status. Go to your Profile, open the menu, then "Below More info and support, tap Account Status", and look under "Features you can't use" (steps).
- Tap Tell us if you did nothing that matches the triggers above. Instagram publishes no reply time, and a review may or may not lift the restriction.
Account Status may show the restriction and its end time, but Meta says it shows "some restrictions", so yours may not appear there. The restriction applies to the account, so switching to a VPN, another Wi-Fi network or a proxy does not lift it.
How long does Try Again Later last on Instagram?
Instagram does not publish a duration for Try Again Later. Meta says Account Status shows "some restrictions your account might have and how long they'll last." When Account Status gives an end time for your account, that is the only reliable answer. Fixed timeframes quoted in forums and videos do not come from Instagram.
How do you tell a restriction from a ban or an Instagram glitch?
A Try Again Later restriction blocks specific actions while the rest of the app keeps working. Use this rule to tell which problem you have:
- One action fails, browsing works, and the popup mentions restricting activity: you have an activity restriction. Check Features you can't use in Account Status.
- Nothing loads at all (feed, stories and DMs all fail), and other people report the same: this is more likely a connection problem or a service outage than a restriction on you.
- You cannot log in at all: this is not an activity restriction. The login screen and Account Status show what applies to the account.
How should you run several Instagram accounts you own?
Instagram allows "up to 10 accounts logged in at one time" on its account switching page, as of October 2026. Agencies and social media managers who run more accounts than that, across several devices, need each setup to stay consistent.
VoidMob's advice (this comes from us, not from Instagram): give each account its own consistent connection and device, and keep it there. If many accounts like, follow and comment in the same minutes from one shared IP, their activity looks like the work of one operator. How Instagram Detects Multiple Accounts covers the linking signals in depth.
Intended use
Running several Instagram accounts on separate mobile connections is for legitimate work: managing client accounts for an agency, keeping a brand profile apart from a personal one, and checking how your own content appears to local users. It is not appropriate for fraud, credential abuse, engagement manipulation, or any activity that violates a target platform's Terms of Service.
With Instagram mobile proxies from VoidMob, you have two ways to pin one account to one connection:
- A dedicated device per account. One real 4G/5G device is assigned to you alone. Its IP changes only when you rotate it from the dashboard, the API or the device's private rotation link, so every session stays sticky until you decide otherwise.
- A sticky proxy list per account on a pay-per-GB pool. Each list has its own login and password, a package holds up to 100 lists, and all of them draw from the same GB balance. Set the list to Sticky and it holds the same device for as long as that device stays online. Sticky sessions explains how that differs from rotation.
Both options exit through the carrier's CGNAT, so the public IPv4 address is shared with that carrier's ordinary subscribers. To size the setup, see how many accounts per proxy. If an account needs its own phone number for confirmation and two-factor codes, use a non-VoIP carrier number that you keep, such as a dedicated monthly line, so you don't lose access when a short rental ends. Options are on the Instagram SMS verification page.
A clean setup does not lift a restriction that is already on an account. Before you log a profile in, confirm the connection it will actually use:

Why is my Instagram saying Try Again Later?
Instagram restricted an action on your account, usually because activity looked automated, repetitive or unauthorized: fast repeated likes or follows, identical comments, a third-party app that holds your password, or someone else using your login. Instagram's help center says 'Try again later' can appear when inauthentic activity is detected on your account.
How long does Try Again Later last on Instagram?
Instagram does not publish a duration. Account Status sometimes shows how long a restriction will last. When it does, that is the only figure that applies to your account.
How do I know if Instagram banned me?
If you can still log in and browse, and only likes, follows, comments or DMs fail, you have an activity restriction, not a ban. Open Account Status from your profile menu and check Features you can't use.
Is Try Again Later a glitch on Instagram's side?
Usually not. The popup says Instagram restricted an activity. If the whole app fails to load and other people report the same, a connection problem or service outage is more likely.
Does a VPN or new IP remove Try Again Later?
No. The restriction is tied to the account and appears in Account Status, so changing your network does not change it. Remove the cause, secure the account and wait.
Will tapping Tell us lift the restriction?
Not necessarily. It sends your case to Instagram for review. Instagram publishes no reply time and does not promise any outcome.
