What to expect in Laos
Laos has four mobile operators, and Unitel, a Viettel joint venture, has the most subscribers. This eSIM uses LaoTel (Lao Telecom), which launched the country's first 5G in 2020 and was still the only commercial 5G operator in December 2024. That LaoTel 5G is what our Laos plans are sold on.
LaoTel's 5G reaches Vientiane, including Wattay International Airport, plus Luang Prabang, Champassak, Bokeo and Savannakhet. On the railway north through Vang Vieng, 47% of the track runs in tunnels, so signal cuts in and out.
Data exits in Singapore, so Lao sites see a Singaporean address.
